Students in NTU Civil Engineering will be provided with ample research resources. Current master’s students having completed at least one semester of study may, with the recommendation of two professors (assistant professors or above) from their associated academic program, apply for entry into a direct-entry doctoral degree program (“direct-entry Ph.D. program”). Geotechnical Engineering, also known as geotechnics, is the application of scientific methods and theories to investigate the mechanical behavior and characteristics of geomaterials for the solution of engineering problems and the design of engineering works. The research of Geotechnical Engineering covers soil mechanics, rock mechanics, engineering geology, geophysics, hydrogeology, and other related fields.

Structural Engineering is one of the most important areas in Civil Engineering. The Structural division has 15 faculty members, with expertise in all areas related to structural and material engineering. The main research activities of this division include the analysis and design of buildings, bridges, dams, and towers. Currently, the Department of Civil Engineering is considered as the best in Taiwan and as one of the leading institutions in the world in both applied and academic research in the Structural Engineering area.

Construction Engineering and Management (CEM) is one of the newest disciplines in Civil Engineering. Established in 1990, the CEM division aims to bring new knowledge and innovations, and world-class professionals to the construction industry. We focus not only on the new technological challenges of today’s construction projects, but also the unique ability to integrate modern managerial/social sciences with civil engineering. The Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) Division in the Department of Civil Engineering was established to fulfill the increasing demand for technology-driven solutions in modern Civil Engineering practice. The Division’s research efforts aim to deepen and broaden the knowledge in response to the impact in the unprecedented growth of computing power, networks and artificial intelligence.
