Geotechnical Engineering, also known as geotechnics, is the application of scientific methods and theories to investigate the mechanical behavior and characteristics of geomaterials for the solution of engineering problems and the design of engineering works. The research of Geotechnical Engineering covers soil mechanics, rock mechanics, engineering geology, geophysics, hydrogeology, and other related fields.

Structural Engineering is one of the most important areas in Civil Engineering. The Structural division has 15 faculty members, with expertise in all areas related to structural and material engineering. The main research activities of this division include the analysis and design of buildings, bridges, dams, and towers. Currently, the Department of Civil Engineering is considered as the best in Taiwan and as one of the leading institutions in the world in both applied and academic research in the Structural Engineering area.

The Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) Group in the Department of Civil Engineering was established to fulfill the increasing demand for technology-driven solutions in modern civil engineering practice.
